As Rhian Williams points out, in her brief introduction to this comprehensive guide, poetry is difficult (p. 3). Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that poetry (like any other kind of writing) can be difficult, but in any case Dr Williams is surely right that poetry is generally perceived to be more difficult to read than a novel or play, for example, and that the study of poetry at school or University can instil ‘confusion and fear’ rather than the enjoyment which ought to be the end of reading poetry (p. 4).
